When it comes to basement waterproofing and damp proofing, there are two types of slabs available – one way and two-way slabs. In order to understand the difference between these two types, it is important to know the construction basics for each. Both of these slabs are required for basement waterproofing and damp proofing.

Difference between One-Way Slab and Two-Way Slabs The main difference between one way slab and two-way slabs lies on the construction of the base slabs. One way slabs are a solid slabs that are supported directly by structural joist’s and loads are distributed equally around the supporting structure. On the other hand, two-way slabs are a kind of slabs that supports loads on both the up and down sides. As such, they tend to be less durable as compared to one-way slabs.

Difference between One-Way Slab and Two Way Slab If you are looking for a water-resistant material to strengthen your foundation walls from water, then you should definitely go for a one-way slab. However, if you need a stronger, longer lasting and moisture resistant material, then you should prefer a two-way slab. The reason behind this difference is on account of the different construction materials used in a one-way slab and two-way slab. For example, a one-way slab made of steel will crack easily if it is subjected to intense pressure to a two-way slab made of concrete will stand for long and strong.

Difference Between One Way Slab Reinforcement Details Though many people think that one-way slabs are just simple slabs, they actually have several differences between them. For starters, a one-way slab normally contains reinforcing steel ribs which are arranged in either a curved or straight manner. These ribs are arranged in such a way that the ends of the ribs touch the edge of the wall as it extends outwards towards the building. Also, the design and spacing of these steel ribs are such that it forms an entire half circle around the wall.

Difference Between One-Way Slab and Two Way Slab Another significant difference between a one-way slab and a two way slab is the length of the slab wall. In the case of the former, the entire slab moves in a single direction whereas in the latter, the seawall moves in two directions. This difference also results in the difference of the height of the wall. For instance, in the case of the one-way slabs, the distance from the center of the wall to the top of the floor is two inches while it is six inches in the case of two-way slabs. Moreover, in the case of a one-way slab, the depth of the wall is always one foot above the level of the ground whereas in the case of two-way slabs, the depth of the wall is always between six and eight inches above the ground.

Difference Between One-Way Slab and Two-Way Slabs The thickness or width of the slabs is another difference between one way slabs and two-way slabs. A one-way slab, as the name suggests, consists of a single slab and in case of two-way slabs, it is two slabs stacked upon each other. However, this difference does not mean that both slabs are the same. The depth or the width of the slabs can be increased by cutting either the outer or the inner face of the slab.

Difference Between One-Way Slab and Two-Way Slabs The slabs have no space for the beams on the two opposite sides and this results in their support. However, in the case of one-way slabs, the beams can be installed on the two opposite sides. Also, in the case of slabs with two sides, the one-way slabs are preferred.

Difference Between One-Way Slab and Two Way Slab The slabs do not have any spacing between the walls and this results in the wall surface being smoother. This is the reason why the installation of one-way slabs is more expensive as compared to that of two-way slabs. However, the installation of slabs is smooth and attractive and this is another reason why they are more preferred than the slabs. The difference between slabs is that the one-way slabs require extensive manual work and they also take comparatively longer time. In case of two-way slabs, the work required is less and the installation is quick and easy.
